The Book of Mormon is a volume of ancient scripture written by divine revelation through ancient prophets. It gives an account of the ancient inhabitants of the American continent. It answers many of life’s questions, such as where we came from, and why we are here. It teaches the gospel of Jesus Christ. I’ve come to know that the Book of Mormon is true through study and prayer. I’ve felt the Spirit of God testify to me that it is true and that it is the word of God. It teaches us the word’s of Jesus Christ.

Here is a personal testimony of The Book of Mormon by Maria Mash, Guatemala

My husband was coming home when he found a bag in the street. To his surprise, inside was a copy of the Book of Mormon. He brought it home and showed it to me. He read it for a while, found it interesting, but eventually put it away.

A short time later, he died. I went to one church after another looking for comfort and wanting to know if life would go on after death. I was engulfed in doubt, with many unanswered questions.

Then on my way to work, I saw a book that I recognized on the sidewalk– the Book of Mormon. I took it with me because finding it brought back memories of my dear husband. I mentioned my discovery to someone who suggested that I read it.

The days went by, and one night I visited my sister, who was a Latter-day Saint. The full-time missionaries were there, and they sang the hymn “I Am a Child of God.” I knew right then that the missionaries could answer my questions.

After receiving the discussions and gaining a testimony, I was baptized. Today I can testify with total certainty that Joseph Smith saw the Father and His Son, Jesus Christ.

I believe it was no coincidence that my husband and I both found the Book of Mormon. Even though my husband was not able to be baptized during his life, I am happy that, because of temple ordinances, he and I and our two precious children can be together as a family for all eternity. The Book of Mormon brought us together and brought peace to our souls.

Keith L. Brown is a convert to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and serves as the Ward Mission Leader in the Annapolis, Maryland Ward.

Is Your Radio Tuned to the Right Frequency? A Biblical Reflection

Bible Verse:

Proverbs 2:1-5, “My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee; so that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding; yea, if thou criest after
knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding; if thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; then shalt thou understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God.”

In my apartment I have a replica of an antique table top radio that was once a gift that I had given to my mother. My father kept the radio in his house after my mother passed, and upon his passing I was able to obtain the radio and now have it in my possession as a precious keepsake. Although the radio may appear to be antique, inside of its case are modern electronic components that allow it to be turned on and tuned in to some of my favorite radio stations.

However, to hear the signal that I desire, I must be actively involved – I cannot just wish it so. Instead, I have to physically get up, go over to the radio, turn it on, set it to AM or FM, and turn the tuning knob until I find the location on the dial corresponding to the station that I wish to listen to.

When attempting to tune the receiver to get it centered on the correct frequency, I find that if I move the tuning knob just a little too much to the right or to the left, the result is a lot of unwanted static and background noise. Although I may still be able to discern the station that I have selected, the listening experience is not as clear and interference-free as it would be with the station perfectly tuned to its frequency.

Just as radio waves (and TV and wireless communication signals) fill the atmosphere around us, invisible to the eye, undetectable to the ear, unnoticed to the passer-by, so also does the Holy Spirit surround us all.

This life is an individual journey in which we each face our own trials, temptations, difficulties, and heartaches. At times it may seem that we are all alone and that there is no one who cares. Our Heavenly Father has promised that He would never leave us nor forsake us. He has promised that He would send us One who would be a comforter, guide, and constant companion. However, in order to receive the blessings of the constant companionship of this One and to learn from Him, we need to have our “radio” turned on and “tuned in” to the correct frequency in order to hear His voice as He guides, leads, and directs our path, and teaches us the truth of all things. In John 14:26 we read, “But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you”.

Just as a radio will not automatically turn itself on and perfectly tune to the station that we desire to listen to without some interaction on our part, it is only through the renewing of our hearts and minds that we are able to turn on our spiritual “radio” and use its tuning knob, which is our faithfulness and obedience, to tune to the exact frequency wherein we will be able to clearly hear the voice of the Holy Spirit. As we continue to keep ourselves “in tune” with our Heavenly Father, through our faithfulness and obedience, our “radio” will continue to give a clear and undistorted signal; however, if we lose focus and begin to move the tuning knob a little to the left or a little to the right, we will become distracted by the cares of the world and will end up listening to a lot of static and distortion. We may also need to adjust the volume control so as to drown out the noises of the world and focus only on the Still Small Voice as He speaks to us.

Is your “radio” turned on, and is it tuned perfectly to the correct frequency? Solomon gave this wise counsel as recorded in Proverbs 2:1-5, “My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee; so that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding; yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding; if thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; then shalt thou understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God.”

I leave you these humble thoughts in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus the Christ. Amen.

24Yea, wo unto this people, because of this time which has arrived, that ye do cast out the prophets, and do mock them, and cast stones at them, and do slay them, and do all manner of iniquity unto them, even as they did of old time.

This photo is of a living prophet on earth today, God’s spokesman, just like Moses, Elijah, Abraham, and others. His name is President Thomas S. Monson, and we invite you to hear his words, and listen to the Savior’s instructions for you and for each of us in our day. Regardless of the persecution, mocking of prophetic voices, they exist and we’re here to bear witness of them, as does one eloquent LDS (“Mormon”) apostle in our day, as follows:

When the Church was first organized, in fact, the day on which it was organized, the Lord was speaking to the Church. He didn’t mean just the six members that were then the constituted number of the Church: he was speaking about the President of the Church, who was the Prophet Joseph Smith at that time. And this is what he said: [Doctrine and Covenants 21:4–6.]

We have some tight places to go before the Lord is through with this church and the world in this dispensation, which is the last dispensation, which shall usher in the coming of the Lord. The gospel was restored to prepare a people ready to receive him. The power of Satan will increase; we see it in evidence on every hand. There will be inroads within the Church. There will be, as President Tanner has said, ‘Hypocrites, those professing, but secretly are full of dead men’s bones.’ We will see those who profess membership but secretly are plotting and trying to lead people not to follow the leadership that the Lord has set up to preside in this church.

Now the only safety we have as members of this church is to do exactly what the Lord said to the Church in that day when the Church was organized. We must learn to give heed to the words and commandments that the Lord shall give through his prophet, ‘as he receiveth them, walking in all holiness before me; . . . as if from mine own mouth, in all patience and faith.’ (Doctrine and Covenants 21:4–5.) There will be some things that take patience and faith. You may not like what comes from the authority of the Church. It may contradict your political views. It may contradict your social views. It may interfere with some of your social life. But if you listen to these things, as if from the mouth of the Lord himself, with patience and faith, the promise is that ‘the gates of hell shall not prevail against you; yea, and the Lord God will disperse the powers of darkness from before you, and cause the heavens to shake for your good, and his name’s glory.’ (Doctrine and Covenants 21:6.)” (Harold B. Lee, Conference Report, Oct. 1970, p. 152).

I remember when I came to know in a deeper way than ever before that Jesus Christ is the literal Light of the World. It was personal and it occurred in a non-descript room in a hotel where I was staying in London at the time. But I know it wasn’t just for me; I want to bear personal witness that the source of every inspiration, every power of good, every piece of truth, light, intellectual and spiritual, physical, electrical, solar, mental, is from Jesus Christ, and has Him to thank for its source, impact and blessing. This is beautifully and succinctly stated by an apostle, whose witness exceeds my own humble one, as follows:

When our Lord says, ‘I am the light, and the life, and the truth of the world’ (Ether 4:12), he is teaching that he is the source of life, light, and truth; that he sets the perfect example in their use; and that all men must look to him for these things (Bruce R. McConkie, Mormon Doctrine, p. 448).

“And if ye shall believe in Christ ye will believe in these words, for they are the words of Christ, … and they teach all men that they should do good.”

2 Nephi 33:10

I’ve read The Book of Mormon multiple times. The first time, it was through the night, after having read parts of the Koran, and other readings by Swedenborg, Christian Scientists, Seventh Day Adventists, in a quest for truth. I compared what I read about Christ’s teachings and the order of His Church and delegation of His authority to act in His name, with what I learned by reading the New Testament, which I’d just completed. I actually knew, reading the Book of Mormon that evening, by a clear manifestation of the Spirit of God–which, by the way, is real, tangible and God-given to testify of truth–that this Book of Mormon was true. It contained the additional revelation I knew must have existed.

That record, of course, is absolutely true, and Latter-day Saints (nicknamed “Mormons” by some) believe that no one should ever tamper with His gospel but that one should declare it as He has revealed Himself. How that has been interpreted has been the bone of misunderstanding. While mortals are not to tamper with His revelations to us, God can certainly continue to author and speak additional words to us. As Author of our salvation and Eternal Parent, why would He stop speaking to His children? To those who think He has stopped, the Lord Himself has said, you may say: : A Bible, we have got a Bible, and we need no more Bible. . . . ” In response, He adds, “Wherefore murmur ye, because that ye shall receive more of my word?’ (2 Nephi 29.)”

What God has revealed originally became clouded over time, darkened by apostasy, and pieced together as well as well-intentioned Reformers could. But a reformation wasn’t enough to bring back the pure, unadulterated truths of the gospel of Jesus Christ as He taught them. That required a restoration. I testify that that restoration of truth through the prophet Joseph Smith has occurred in our day, and that The Church of Jesus Christ is now again upon the earth. We hope you’ll continue to learn more about it, and ask God for yourself, if these things are true.
