Book of Mormon: Darkest Night, Brightest Day

Today, I’m writing to those who are barely hanging on.

There is a saying that goes something along the lines of: “The darkest night always comes before the brightest day.” This holds the most true for the Nephite people in 3 Nephi 8-10, unfortunately. We are talking about a people who were once the most righteous people in the land. Then in these chapters and the ones preceding it, we see a dramatic change. They have become more and more prideful, focusing on their riches and their treasures instead of on God. The prophets strive their hardest to call them to repentance, but their words of wisdom fall on deaf ears. Then it finally happens. The prophecies that have been foretold for hundreds of years about the events preceding the Lord’s coming finally are fulfilled, and tragically many people are not prepared. We read that tempests strike, fires rage, whirlwinds blow and the entire earth quakes until everything was in absolute ruin. Thousands of people die, and those who lived “howl and weep” for the loss of their loved ones.

Then one of, if not, the most wonderful happenings in history occurs: the coming of Christ to the Americas. In Chapter 11, the Nephites see Jesus Christ descend from the heavens clothed in white. He declares to them who He is and shows them He has conquered death – both spiritual and physical – for them. They each remember the words of the prophets and begin to weep with joy, crying: “Hosanna! Blessed be the name of the Most High God!” They are filled with the purest of joys, for they know the truth of the gospel and they feel our Savior’s love.

We ourselves will go through tempests, storms, fires, earthquakes and whirlwinds of our own, but they will be in a spiritual sense, if not a physical one. Some who read this may be going through some stormy times now. Those storms can’t be avoided because they are key to our spiritual progress here on earth. What we can control, though, is how prepared we are and how we act through those storms. If we are faithful, we will not fear whatever Satan blows our way. If we are prepared, we will be able to endure by the power and grace of God. Know that there is a light at the end of the tunnel, and, thankfully for us, that light is Jesus Christ. He loves you and is not only hoping you stay righteous and endure to the end, He is also doing all that He can to help you. And if times just seem to get darker and darker for you, remember: “The future is as bright as your faith.”

Book of Mormon: Christ in the Americas

Today in Book of Mormon we learned about Christ coming down and visiting the Americas after His Resurrection. One particular thing we talked about is how before He came down, a voice spoke out of heaven. This is described in 3 Nephi 11:3-5.

And it came to pass that while they were thus conversing one with another, they heard a voice as if it came out of heaven; and they cast their eyes round about, for they understood not the voice which they heard; and it was not a harsh voice, neither was it a loud voice; nevertheless, and notwithstanding it being a small voice it did pierce them that did hear to the center, insomuch that there was no part of their frame that it did not cause to quake; yea, it did pierce them to the very soul, and did cause their hearts to burn.

And it came to pass that again they heard the voice, and they understood it not.

And again the third time they did hear the voice, and did open their ears to hear it; and their eyes were towards the sound thereof; and they did look steadfastly towards heaven, from whence the sound came.

The people did not understand at first, probably because they were not yet ready to hear it. They looked to each other first. Symbolically, this shows that their hearts were not completely in tune with the Spirit yet. Their first instinct was still to look to man before God. However, once they had felt the power of the voice in their hearts, then they understood and looked to heaven. They allowed the Holy Ghost to change their understanding, and only then could they understand the voice.

Today, we don’t have such symbolic or life-changing examples. We have little trials and little decisions that show God where we put our trust. One of the indicators I thought of when considering how to show God that I look to Him for my support is by what makes me happy. There are so many wonderful worldly things out there. Some of them are bad, but most aren’t. However, if we put those things first, then we are showing God that those are the things that we trust more. The greatest happiness that can be obtained in this world comes only through Christ and His incredible gift of the Atonement. That should always be first in our lives as the thing that causes the most happiness.

I know that I am certainly not the most perfect at this, because it is difficult for us human beings to always be focused on the eternal. The temporal seems to be always so close and personal that the heavens begin to seem far away and indifferent. Do not allow that; close the gap between you and Heavenly Father. Things go out of style, or are forgotten as new and better things are made. Nothing in this life ever seems to bring long-term happiness or satisfaction. Nothing of this world ever does. The only thing you can place your trust and happiness in with complete certainty cannot be found on this earth. It is okay to want your temporal things, but be sure that the place you put your happiness is on the rock of our Redeemer. Don’t look to man for your salvation, look to Christ. Only He can cause you true happiness.

Book of Mormon: Whatever God Requires is Right

I just thought I’d share with you something that touched me in Book of Mormon class this week as we studied in the Book of Helaman. We can all use a little motivation sometimes to just continue pressing forward along the path. This week, we studied a lot about Samuel the Lamanite in Helaman chapters 13-15. The beginning of chapter 13 stood out to me, in particular. In verse 2, we learn that Samuel had gone to Zarahemla to preach, but had been cast out. He was about to return to his homeland, but then he heard the voice of the Lord commanding him to go back “and prophesy unto the people whatsoever things should come into his heart” (Helaman 13:3). I imagine this would have come as a shock to him; perhaps he was a little confused. After all, he had just been in Zarahemla and they had clearly rejected him. Why would the Lord want him to go back? However, despite this, Samuel immediately turns around and returns to Zarahemla and gives some amazing prophecies about the Savior, converting many Nephites. I believe we can learn a lot from this experience that Samuel the Lamanite had. There are many times in life where the Lord gives us a command we do not fully understand or where a trial comes into our lives and we just don’t get why we are being forced to endure it. What we can learn from Samuel is that the “why” of a trial or commandment doesn’t really matter. What matters is that we follow the voice of the Lord and the promptings of the Spirit and go and do. As we keep the commandments and endure trials, we will come to see why they have been given to us, whether that answer comes right away or in the distant future (John 7:17). Joseph Smith said, “Whatever God requires is right, although we may not see the reason thereof till long after the events transpire.” Keep pressing forward. Trials may not make sense now, but they will in the future. I promise you that there are always better things ahead for those who have faith in Christ and endure the trials and commandments He gives to them.

Book of Mormon: I Love Him

Today we had a very special lesson in my Book of Mormon class. I just wanted to share with you the power of it because it left such a huge impact on me. We talked about our Savior and Redeemer, Jesus Christ. The love which I felt from Him and our Heavenly Father today was absolutely incredible, and it made me extremely love them in reciprocation.

Today we focused on 3 Nephi 11. It begins with the people confused; they keep hearing a voice from heaven, but they cannot understand it. They are physically, externally trying to change—turning their heads and looking toward the sound. But it is only when they “open their ears to hear it,” looking steadfastly toward the sound, that they understand the voice. Physically, we cannot open our ears. But this internal change of opening them is the huge factor in understanding, effecting our external appearance as well. Then, the people hear the Father speak unto them, (recognize that this is one of the few times Heavenly Father does in scripture) and He testifies of Jesus Christ simply, yet extremely powerfully, saying: “Behold my Beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased, in whom I have glorified my name—hear ye him” (3 Nephi 11:7).

In this moment, not a soul can utter a single word, and Christ descends down in the midst of them. Put yourself in their positions for just a minute. Imagine yourself in this multitude of 25,000 people, watching as The Son of God descends before you. Then Christ testifies of Himself, saying, “Behold, I am Jesus Christ; whom the prophets testified shall come into the world.” He then goes on to explain His Atonement. Although He did everything for us, gave His own life for us, He only testifies of Himself in two short verses, showing His humility and absolute selflessness and submission to the Father. Then, instinctively, the people fall to the earth.

In the presence of our beloved prophets today, we instinctively stand if they enter the room—think of general conference. However, in the presence of Christ, we shall fall to the earth before Him. Herein lies a great symbolism: We are a fallen people. Christ is the one who lifts us up, carries us even. Wow. Then, in the multitude of 25,000 people—did I mention thousand—He invites them to come up, one by one, to feel His nail prints and to thrust their hands in His sides. Christ does not care about time. He cares about people. If every person just spent one minute with Christ, that’s 25,000 minutes. He is incredible. The people then fall again, crying “Hosanna!” at His feet to be saved and to worship Him. I wish to every day let the Lord know how much I love Him. I know that He lives. I know that He loves us. I testify that He is the Christ, He is our Savior, and the Atonement is real. I know this as sure as I am living and breathing on this earth today. May we love Him in return. May we serve Him. May we spread this knowledge, happiness and good news to people around us, around the country—even around the world. This is what the gospel is all about. This is why we are here on this earth. If you have not come to know Christ, I challenge you to come to know Him. Oh, how He loves you! How His hand is stretched out to you still. Grasp it, take hold, and never, ever let go.

Book of Mormon: Sweeping the Corners

I know that these posts are supposed to be for someone else, but I found something that really helped me that I shared with my roommate. In Alma 50 when Captain Moroni strengthened the old cities, we talked about “sweeping the corners” in class. When we talked about what that meant, delving into all of your life and sweeping out the corners, or the little things that aren’t visible, and sweeping them into a dustpan, I was reminded of temples. In temples they keep everything so clean that they dust even the detailing in frames and furniture, and they always sweep the corners. In this way, I found that when we sweep our corners, we are more worthy to enter the temple because we are as spotless as the temple is.

The Book of Mormon contains many plain and precious truths that were lost with the many translations of the Holy Bible. As an ancient scriptural text that members of The Church of Jesus Christ (sometimes mistakenly called the “Mormon” Church) know to be a true book of scripture, the Book of Mormon with the Bible testifies of the divinity of Christ and His commandments for us in these days. However, the Book of Mormon contains stories and prophecies that are much clearer in intention and in persuading men to be better than any other book I have read. All the commandments and attributes contained within are very relevant to our day, though some stick out more than others depending on what stage of life one may be in when reading.

One lesson found early in the book is a lesson on agency and entitlement, taught by both the words and deeds of a prophet named Nephi (nee-fie).

The Book of Mormon is made up of many books written by the prophets who inhabited the ancient American continent. The first was written by Nephi. In 1 Nephi 15, Nephi is trying to explain to his older brothers, Laman and Lemuel, the revelations he and his father have been given. However, his brothers aren’t receptive and think they are without fault, like many people might feel in their situation.

In 1 Nephi 15:8, Nephi records, “And I said unto them: Have ye inquired of the Lord?” His older brothers’ response, “We have not; for the Lord maketh no such thing known unto us.”

Laman and Lemuel’s response represents many of us when faced with a challenge. They are sort of willing enough to listen to what is told to them; however, they have no desire to actually go and find out something for themselves.

We should be actively engaged in our learning, both temporal and spiritual.

Too often, especially as a student, I’ve noticed this mentality with those who attend classes. Students look to be entertained, to have the answers simply given to them. They would like to learn, however they lack the desire to seek and be taught. A critical part of learning is action. On campuses nationwide, not just BYU, students know that the fastest way to failure is to just show up at class, and the fastest way to success is to engage oneself in their own education by actively pursuing knowledge.

Knowledge is ability, and ability precedes success. Instead of feeling entitled to learn and then do nothing about it, go and seek after your own knowledge, both in spiritual and secular endeavors, and you will come to understand the truth of all things. Christ said, “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you” (Luke 11:9).

This lesson from the Book of Mormon can be applied in other places, not just in circles of education. Have you ever seen how much of our daily news is simply rumors? There is an incredible amount of unsubstantiated claims in the world around us, and the amount of it we take as truth is appalling. It is a great practice to seek after the truth in all situations. Fact check as much as you want.

However, I know one way to know the truth of all things, and that is through prayer. Prayer is direct communication between God and an individual. When you pray in faith, you are lifting your thoughts and words to the heavens to the most powerful being in the universe, the Omnipotent, Omnipresent God of Heaven and Earth.

We can seek answers from the Lord through prayer.

He only speaks truth through the whisperings of the Holy Ghost, or the Holy Spirit as some call him. Why, then, would anyone sit around and wait for knowledge to simply be given to them? Or, even worse, why would anyone say there is no way to know the truth for sure, so they give up the pursuit? With an all-knowing God in Heaven who loves us and wants us to know the truth of all things, it is sheer foolishness to think that truth is never an option.

Thus it is perfectly logical that Nephi asks first, “Have you inquired of the Lord?” to his brothers, and follows it up with a great statement about God. He says, “Do ye not remember the things which the Lord hath said? – If ye will not harden your hearts, and ask me in faith, believing that ye shall receive, with diligence in keeping my commandments, surely these things shall be made known unto you” (1 Nephi 15:11).

I echo Nephi’s words with what I know to be true: I know that if you ask God with a sincere heart, truly seeking truth, the Holy Spirit will manifest the truth unto you if you are receptive to its promptings. May we not be like the rest of the world, confused by a lack of truth. Let us be proactive and find the knowledge that will always benefit us.

As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, also known as Mormon, and a student at BYU I am reading The Book of Mormon. I was assigned to read chapters one through three for my Book of Mormon class. In chapter one, verse twenty it reads, “And when the Jews heard these things they were angry with him; yea, even as with the prophets of old whom they had cast out, and stoned, and slain; and they also sought his life, that they might take it away. But behold, I, Nephi, will show unto you that the tender mercies of the Lord are over all those whom he hath chosen, because of their faith, to make them mighty even unto the power of deliverance.” At the beginning of the chapter readers discover that Lehi, an ancient prophet in Jerusalem, has had a vision that Jerusalem was going to be destroyed. Lehi, around six hundred B.C., warned the people of Jerusalem that if they did not repent they would be destroyed. The people of Jerusalem, or the Jews, did not listen to Lehi. They were angry with Lehi for telling them to repent and they wanted to kill him. Lehi’s son Nephi is the one writing this verse of scripture. Nephi supported and believed in his father. At the beginning of this verse Nephi explains how the Jews reacted when Lehi told them Jerusalem was to be destroyed. Then Nephi writes that he will show readers how the Lord has blessed him in his life because of his faith. He explains that the Lord blesses everyone that has faith.

Lehi preaching in Jerusalem

There is one major principle that I obtained from reading this verse. The principle is that there will be challenges in life, but if I have faith the Lord will bless me. I believe that one of the ways the Lord prepares us for future events is through trials. I know that when I put my trust and faith in the Lord I am blessed. The Lord will bless everyone that puts their faith in Him.

I have had many hard times in my life; nevertheless, the Lord has blessed me greatly. My Mom has been a single Mom my whole life. It has been really tight financially and she has struggled to support my four brothers and me. She has always put her trust and faith in the Lord. She makes sure to look for the blessings the Lord has given her and she prays to give gratitude for the blessings she has received. Because of her faith, my family and I have been blessed financially. If someone were to look at the numbers in our financial situation they would say that there is no way that it should add up. We should not have been able to live in the houses we have lived in, participated in the costly soccer/orchestra activities, and have enough food on our table. We have always had the money for the things that we need even though it doesn’t make sense. I know that the Lord has blessed us financially because of my Mom’s strong faith.

By Lauren O.

A few weeks ago I entered Brigham Young University as a Freshman. Although my home is only a few hours away, I feel like i’ve been placed on another planet, and while i’m sure the excitement will slowly wear off, I know that I will continue to love my new home, BYU. Now, I’m sure you’re wondering why any normal teenager want to go to a school that has as strict of a code on dress and grooming, language, honesty, morality, and alcohol, coffee, and tea as BYU does, and to be honest, I always did too. I have been a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (referred to by the media as “The Mormon Church”) my entire life, but I never understood why the Honor Code was so intense. Now, I understand and am so grateful for it.

I’m sure you know that college life is very different than high school. My mother does not wake me up, make my breakfast, or do my laundry – although if she wanted to, and lived close enough, i’m sure i’d graciously accept the help. I am on my own. If I choose to sleep in and miss class, no one is going to reprimand me. My success or failure is in my own hands. At most universities, fraternities and sororities rule the social scene and also have great impact on the academic aspects because of what happens on the weekend. From talking to my friends, who are scattered at universities all over the country, I’ve learned that drugs, alcohol, and frivolous morality are all defining characteristics of their “college experience”, and we’ve only been in school for a month! BYU is very different, and you can tell by simply walking around campus. The people you see are dressed respectfully and modestly and most wear big smiles on their faces. Instead of swearing and demeaning language, you hear uplifting and happy words and conversations. At parties, we drink Barq’s Root Beer instead of Budweiser and at dances we actually dance, not grind. Because I choose to adhere to the Honor Code, I never have to worry about getting pregnant out of wedlock or missing class because I was hungover. Likewise, I can always feel at peace with myself because I didn’t cheat on my Calculus exam or swear at my best friend in a moment of anger. I’m not saying that BYU is perfect, but it is an amazing place to live at and be a part of.

Youth at BYU follow the Honor Code

So, where did these guidelines in the Honor Code come from and why are they so successful? I’ve recently been studying some scriptures that should help answer this question. In 1 Nephi, Chapter 8 of the Book of Mormon (In case you aren’t aware of this volume of scripture, let me tell you what it is and why it’s significant. The introduction to the The Book of Mormon states that it “…is a volume of holy scripture comparable to the Bible. It is a record of God’s dealings with the ancient inhabitants of the Americas and contains the fulness of the everlasting gospel. The book was written by many ancient prophets by the spirit of prophecy and revelation. The crowning event recorded in the Book of Mormon is the personal ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ among the Nephites soon after his resurrection. It puts forth the doctrines of the gospel, outlines the plan of salvation, and tells men what they must do to gain peace in this life and eternal salvation in the life to come.”) a prophet named Lehi shares a dream he had. In verses 10 to 12, he says, “…I beheld a tree, whose fruit was desirable to make one happy. And it came to pass that I did go forth and partake of the fruit thereof; and I beheld that it was most sweet, above all that I ever before tasted. Yea, and I beheld that the fruit thereof was white, to exceed all the whiteness that I had ever seen. And as I partook of the fruit thereof it filled my soul with exceedingly great joy; wherefore, I began to be desirous that my family should partake of it also; for I knew that it was desirable above all other fruit.” We later learn that the fruit Lehi spoke of is a symbol for the love of God and the message is that we must come unto Christ, be filled with His love, and learn to love others as He does. This is also the main message of the Book of Mormon, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and Brigham Young University. The Honor Code is inspired of the Lord – the guidelines help me focus on improving and challenging myself to grow socially, physically, and mentally. I know that we have been given commandments and guidelines because God loves us and truly wants us to be happy, in both this life and the next. I know that as I listen to His counsel and obey His words I will be able to succeed in all challenges that I face in life, especially in this time of transition in my life. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is true, and I am so grateful to be a part of it and to attend BYU.

By Caisa B.

I had read the introduction to the Book of Mormon before. I had always thought of it as sort of an author’s note. Something at the beginning of a regular book, where the author takes a moment and briefly gives a background to their story. But no one ever takes the time to read the author’s note. Simply because why would you want to read a description when you can just read the real thing? With this outlook I had always just skimmed the introduction, not giving it much thought to what it was saying. But this week when I was tasked to read it as one of my first readings of my college career, I was determined to truly read it. So I went for it.

As I remembered from my previous skimmings, the introduction was a brief description of the book. But it also is a lot more than that. In the second paragraph the purpose of the Book of Mormon is acknowledged, “to show unto the house of Israel what great things the Lord hath done for their fathers… and also to the convincing of the Jew and Gentile that Jesus is the Christ, the Eternal God, manifesting himself unto all nations.” For the first time, I actually read those words and they meant something to me. The Book of Mormon was saved for this day and age for a reason. That reason is to testify of Jesus Christ’s ministry to the people in the Americas.

I grew up in a Latter-Day Saint family. I had never doubted that the church was true because that is what I was raised to believe it. But now that I am older I recognize the need to figure out for myself what I believe. College is a time for finding yourself and figuring out who you want to be, independent of your parents. I am writing this on the same campus that my Grandma attended. She came to Brigham Young University not knowing that it was a private religious college. But she quickly figured it out and investigated the church. Her life changed on this campus. It was here she was converted to the Latter Day Saint faith, married to my grandpa and started an eternal family. Her decisions on this campus affected not only her life, but also the lives of all of her posterity.

I want to experience a spiritual conversion like my grandma did. I have a head start because I already believe this church is true, but I can read the Book of Mormon with the intensity of someone that is investigating the church. The Book of Mormon was written to convince people that Jesus is the Christ. I want to let these scriptures convince me of this. I am excited to start my own personal spiritual conversion. It is at this new stage of my life, where I am on my own for the first time that I can move strengthen my testimony of the scriptures.

In my BYU Book of Mormon religion class this week, we have been studying and discussing the very beginning of the Book of Mormon, including the first few chapters of the first book, 1 Nephi. There are tons of things to pull out of the scriptures, especially from the Book of Mormon, but I just want to focus on a principle that stood out to me when I was studying earlier this week. The principle is the choice we have in our attitude towards the trials and hardships that God gives us, and the subsequent blessings and consequences.

The first part of the Book of Mormon is about the story of Lehi (a prophet who lived in Jerusalem at the time of Jeremiah and Zedekiah), his family, and their commandment to leave Jerusalem. Lehi had four sons, and while they all followed their father, some were righteous and some were wicked. When I studied the first part of their story, I realized that the righteousness and wickedness stemmed from their attitudes about the commands of God. Because of the attitude each one had about following the prophet and the Lord, they each became either closer or further from God.

Nephi and his brothers

For example, in 1 Nephi chapter 2 of the Book of Mormon, Lehi is commanded by God to leave into the wilderness. He is obedient to the command of God, and he departs with his family, including his four sons; Laman, Lemuel, Sam, and Nephi.

Laman and Lemuel murmur and complain because of the hardship God had called them to endure, but Nephi chooses to humble himself to God’s will. Nephi, instead of whining, prays to God and he is able to have faith that God would bless and protect them, and also have trust in his father’s teachings from God. Laman and Lemuel had sour attitudes, but Nephi’s attitude embodied a willingness to follow the Lord.

This is important, because Laman, Lemuel, and Nephi all had to go through the same trial. They all lost friends, money and possessions, and a comfortable home to follow their divinely-led father into the middle of a wilderness, without knowing the outcome. They all grew up with their father’s teachings and they were all familiar with the doctrines and gospel of Jesus Christ. They all followed the prophet and the commands of God. But they chose to take the commandment in different ways, and that was what changed them. Laman and Lemuel chose to turn against God because they didn’t understand God’s plan for them. Because of their choice, they grew bitter and lost both their relationship with God and blessings from God. Nephi, on the other hand, chose to still have faith in God even though he didn’t understand why, and trusted in the promise of the Lord that those who followed Him would be blessed. As a result, he was blessed for his obedience and faith, gaining peace, a greater trust in God, and a deeper relationship with the Lord.
