As I was reading the Book of Mormon in my religion class here at Brigham Young University, I came across an interesting passage. In it a man was talking with an angel and witnessing a vision of God’s plan. One of the central focus points of it all was Jesus Christ, which I find to be fitting. And one of my favorite parts of the vision is when it is mentioned that the love of God is the “most desirable above all things.”
Interesting. The most desirable thing? That’s an interesting idea. We all desire something, whether little kids looking forward to opening Christmas
So what is it all about? Well, John stated that God so loved the world that he sent his son, Jesus Christ. And through Christ we are saved from our fallen state and raised to be with God. But not just that, we are raised to be more than who we are right now. Through Christ we can do good, we can feel more at peace, we can lift other’s burdens. So I would suppose that through God’s love, we can grow and we can have another chance.
Let me tell you what this means to me as a person and more specifically as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (some of you may have heard of it referred to as ‘the Mormon Church’). There have been times in my life, both recent and not so recent where I have been overwhelmed by life. Take yesterday for instance: I was walking home, feeling crushed by everything I had to do; and I had hopes and dreams that I wasn’t so sure I would ever be able to accomplish. Yes, my life was great, the sun was still in the sky and air was still in my lungs, but life felt so hard. My heart was heavy. But then I thought about God and his love. And that led me to think about the bigger picture of life, beyond today’s problems and this week’s problems. I thought about how the most powerful being in the universe cared for and loved me deeply and personally, and how he wanted me to become like him. And then I thought of how it didn’t matter too terribly much how this week went, as long as I was faithful to God and tried the best that I could, to both think of Him and follow His commandments. Then everything would work out in the end. That brought me strength. That’s what the love of God does for someone. My day got better after that, my head was held a little higher, because I knew God loved me.
