As a BYU student and a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (inadvertently referred to by the media as “The Mormon Church”), I have been studying the many references to Jesus Christ that are found in The Book of Mormon. The Book of Mormon is “Another Testament of Jesus Christ” and, like the Bible, it contains many stories of Jesus Christ healing those who are sick and afflicted.
As a student at Brigham Young University, I have the opportunity to study The Book of Mormon this semester in my religion class. This past week we studied 1 Nephi chapter 11. Verse 31 says,
“…I beheld the Lamb of God going forth among the children of men. And I beheld multitudes of people who were sick, and who were afflicted with all manner of diseases, and with devils and unclean spirits… And they were healed by the power of the Lamb of God; and the devils and the unclean spirits were cast out.”
This verse teaches us that if we turn to Jesus Christ, He can heal us. He has the power to heal us regardless of the type of affliction; whether it is a physical illness or an emotional struggle. Just as He healed those who came to Him during His time living on the earth, if we turn to Him in prayer, He can heal us and comfort us.
This truth is especially important to me at this time of my life. As someone who struggles with anxiety, it has been especially difficult to face all of the pressures that come with being a college student at the beginning of a semester. It is easy for me to get overwhelmed with essays to write, exams to study for, emails to send, and laundry to do. Amidst the craziness and uncertainty of my life, my relationship with Jesus Christ is my source of peace. All I have to do is turn to Him in prayer and my heart is filled with calmness that can only come from Him.
As I study Jesus Christ’s characteristics in The Book of Mormon, I am reminded that He wants me to come to Him so He can bless me and heal my troubled heart. He is loving, kind, and merciful, and His greatest desire is for all of us to know of His love and turn to Him in order to be healed of all our pains and weaknesses. I have come to know that despite the mistakes we have made, the weaknesses we have, and feelings that we are not wanted or loved, He can heal us and make us whole. Jesus Christ has the power to piece our hearts back together and make us much more than we could ever be on our own. He will always be waiting for us with outstretched arms, desiring only our happiness and peace. I am so grateful for The Book of Mormon and the way it has strengthened my relationship with my Savior and friend, Jesus Christ.
