I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (known by the media as the Mormons) and I have read The Book of Mormon many times. I know it is true. The Book of Mormon is a sacred book, like the Bible, but this particular book is about the people who lived on the American continent, and the blessing that God gave to that people. The first part of The Book of Mormon is about a man named Nephi, and his family, who left the land of Jerusalem in the year 600 B.C. (13 years before it was destroyed by the Babylonians), and traveled over to the American Continent. Nephi’s father, Lehi, was a prophet called of God, who foresaw the destruction of Jerusalem. He also warned the people there to repent, or the city would be destroyed. Because of his preaching, the people tried to kill him. The Lord warned Lehi of this, and told him to get out of the city, so Lehi and his family left the land of Jerusalem and went to safety in the wilderness.

Lehi, Book of Mormon

Lehi preaching in Jerusalem

While they were in the wilderness, Lehi had a vision, which he told to his family. In the dream he saw a tree with fruit on it, a rod of iron by a path that lead to the tree, a river, and across it he saw a huge building full of people. He also saw people who were holding onto the iron rod, and going to the tree to eat the fruit, but the people in the building were pointing their fingers and laughing at them. The fruit was the most precious fruit you could ever think of, and after people ate it, they were joyous. Now Nephi had no idea what this vision meant, but he decided to pray unto the Lord to help him understand what it meant.

Nephi’s prayer was answered, and he saw the vision his father saw, in which he learned that the tree represented Christ, and that the fruit, that was most desirable, was the love of God. Nephi was also able to see a different vision. Nephi received a vision of the Savior Jesus Christ and his earthly ministry. Nephi saw Mary (the mother of Christ); he saw that Christ was born of a virgin. He saw Christ’s ministry, Jesus being baptized, the Savior healing people, and Christ die on the cross for our sins. The fruit represented the love of God, meaning the atonement, which Christ (the tree) freely gives to us.

The Book of Mormon testifies of Christ

Like I’ve said, I’ve read The Book of Mormon multiple times, and each time I get more out of it. I particularly like this vision of Christ, because it is a witness of his divinity. I have personally felt the love of God many times in my life, because of Jesus Christ. A couple months ago, one of my family members went through a really hard time where they had to be hospitalized while they were at college. It was really hard on my family and me, since I was so close to that family member. The only reason I got through it though, was because of the love of my Savior. I felt alone, but then I prayed to my Heavenly Father for help, and I realized that I wasn’t alone. I could feel the Savior there with me, and I know that through the atonement, he felt all my pains and sorrows. It was because of scriptures like Nephi’s vision of Christ that I know these things. I know that I have a Savior who loves me and cares about me. I bear witness that The Book of Mormon is a true book, and that we can find God’s love in it.
